Final Reflection

After reading what I had posted over the semester I realized has have progressively moved toward an entrepreneur mindset.  I think developing my business idea for the road warriors and continuously adjusting it was a great and made me really think about how to think as an entrepreneur. I think the low of this class if there has to be one would be the elevator pitches. Though I am not a fan of recording myself, I did get better as the semester went on. My favorite part was being able to be creative about my idea and being able to adjust my idea as the semester went on. Now at the end of the semester I feel that I have almost perfected my business plan.
I am very proud of the way I adjusted to this class and the workload. Having multiple assignments due each week meant I really had to focus on my time management and prioritization. I love that I was able to be creative in creating my business and I felt I was getting better with what I adjusted in the business as the semester went on.
I think I have developed an entrepreneur mindset by now because I was forced to think out of the box and figure out ways to keep improving my business concept. I now look at problems as opportunities and I figure out in my head creative solutions on how to fix them. I see myself one day being an entrepreneur and maybe launching my business concept.
One recommendation I would make to a future student of this is to make sure they allocate enough time to this class and its assignments. I would also recommend to really think out of the box when you think about your venture concept. You need to make sure that your concept is feasible and also if people would really pay the product or service.

Opportunity
Billions of dollars get wasted every year by people sitting in traffic. Countless hours of sitting in your car wasting time and wasting gas money. Thousands of cars releasing harmful emissions into the environment can be prevented. This is a lot of money and time that can be saved with a good system. I think this is a problem in our society that can be resolved, and it needs to be urgently resolved. The market I see an opportunity for is defined geographically. I see this problem in geographic areas that are heavily populated and tend to have a lot of traffic congestions. There is no service out there at the moment that specializes in assisting to prevent and control traffic. I think there are customers out there that are willing to pay for a service that saves people time, money and the environment. I think it’s a big opportunity because it is easily scalable and once it is tested in one market, it can then be implemented in other geographic areas. I think the window for this opportunity may be closing soon. Technology is advancing quickly and the billions of dollars that can be saved is an opportunity that very enticing. I think as the environment begins to show more and more affects from human flaws, the opportunity to save the environment will grow bigger and traffic will become one of the things people will want to reduce. I see this service concept being implemented all over the world in very populated cities. I think that this service can useful in foreign cities as well. There are multiple countries that have worse traffic than the U.S.  Countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and Russia all have multiple cities that have worse traffic than the United States and could use my service. The opportunity that I see could be placed in almost anywhere in the world.
Innovation
The service I am offering is called Road Warriors. My road warriors are people who drive specialized trucks to help control and prevent traffic. My drivers who will be on the road at all times will report to any traffic jam or accident to help prevent or control it. These drivers will be all over the city and can report to these incidents faster than the average first responder. My drivers are trained in first aid just in case it needs to be applied. Once my road warrior has evaluated the situation, they then start to empty the road to allow traffic through. They will do this in the state-of-the-art trucks. There trucks will have equipment and tools that allow them to take care of any debris on the road or car wreckage that is stopping traffic. People can report these incidents either on an app or call a service number. We expect to get multiple calls at once for the same incident so we will have a system that filters duplicate callers out for the same traffic jams. We do this because we always want to have as many customer service employees and drivers available. We also have developed an algorithmic system that allows all our drivers to be within 10 minutes of any part of the city at all times. We’ve calculated exactly how many drivers we need at all times depending on the time of the day and what day it is. We have also determined the perfect routes for all of our drivers so they can all be within 10 minutes of any place. To give a simple explanation of this very complex algorithm, we will have our drivers driving in circled routes in the city we are located in. They will be driving in synchronized fashion so when one driver is at north part of their route, the driver south of him should also be near the north part of his route. This allows that all areas to be covered at all times.
Venture Concept
I plan on offering my Road Warrior service to everyone that is located in a certain geographic area. My company will have a partnership with the local government to give my Road Warriors the same authority as first responders have. The local people of the city I am in will all pay a small fee that will be embedded into their car registration fee. So, I will offer my service to everyone on the road who is driving in the city I am located in. Only the people that live in the city will have to pay for service. This allows my company to primarily focus on how to perfect our operations instead of trying drive profits. I think customers will be happy with the service because people will save a lot of time and money which will outweigh the cost of my service. At this point there are no direct competitors but there are other companies that doing similar things we offer. Triple A offers a similar service to us, but our company offers more by not only attending the victim but trying to lessen the effect to other drivers by being faster and clearing the road up. We will have a great customer service team that is always available to answer questions and report incidents. I will need enough employees to handle customer service, driving the trucks, and dealing with public relations. I think our trucks and algorithmic system of routes will put us over any other competitor that will try to enter the market. I think once the concept Is tested in one market that it can be easily duplicated and put in another city. The idea is scalable, and my hope is to put it in every city that suffers with traffic congestion. I see this company becoming a necessity in all highly populated cities once the concept has demonstrated success. I think this service can implemented all over the U.S. and can save billions of dollars on gasoline and save people time. I think our sustainable mission will allows us to gain this partnership the local governments. The partnership with the local government will give us a great competitive advantage and allow us to focus just on delivering a great service.

Feedback: I received feedback that noted that the opportunity was not only available in the U.S. but is available in many other countries. There are multiple countries that have worse traffic than us. I added that once the market was tested in the U.S. that I could then bring the concept to other countries to better traffic all over the world. If we could reduce car emissions across the world, I think our company could make a good impact on the world.

Your Exit Strategy

Everything eventually comes to an end. After running my company for several years and being at the maturity stage of my company, it will be time decided what I want to do with the company. There are multiple factors I would have to consider before I would exit from the company. How much the company is worth would be the first thing I would evaluate before exiting. I would consider who is a shareholder and how much I would gain from selling the company. I would not do any of these considerations if I feel the company is not perfect. If I see there is room for improvement in my company, then I don’t think I would consider selling it. My purpose for the company was to create a service that is for the greater good. I want my company to benefit everyone who drives a car. I want the company to save people gas money, time and I would also want it to drastically benefit the environment.
I think I will end up staying with the company for the long run until I retire. I think I will keep improving the company throughout my lifetime. I will want to continue improving the concept and also would want the company to scale as much as it can. I would like to put this concept in every major city in the U.S. and I do not think it’ll be possible for me to do in a short period of time.
My exit strategy is influenced by my growth intentions. I want to grow this company as big as I possibly can. I want to scale at a feasible speed to put the Road Warriors in every major city possible.

Reading Reflection No. 3

Elon Musk went through a tough childhood while living in South Africa. He was bullied and his parents separated while he was young. His dad was an engineer who was also an alcoholic. What surprised me the most is that Musk had the perseverance in him to get through all his hardships and become a successful entrepreneur. What I admire the most about him is that he left his birthplace to do bigger things. What I admire the least about Musk is the way he treated some employees and his wife. Some sources say he treated his wife like an employee. Musk encountered many failures throughout his career within multiple companies. Elon was asked his after his 3rd failed launch attempt if he would give up and he said that he will never give up. Elon also has a very detail plan to colonize mars.
I noticed that Elon Musk showed a lot of perseverance throughout his life. From having a tough childhood to failing rocket launches, Elon has gotten a lot of backlash for the way he runs his companies. He continues to strive to do things for the greater good and I admire this about him. If I were able to ask Elon a question, I would ask him why he decided to pursue the mission a colonizing Mars. I would also ask him what made him decide that it was a good idea to leave his birthplace to go to Canada.
I think that Elon Musk has a different perspective of hard work than most people. Elon Musk works hard toward his goals, but I don’t think he views it has hard work. I think his passion for what he does is bigger than anything and he enjoys it. He with no problem works more than overtime. He continues to work until what he wants is accomplished.

Celebrating Failure

I think there are multiple things that I fail at on a daily basis that I think I can improve on. Things like not making my bed in the morning, not doing laundry on time or not washing m dish. These kinds of failures occur daily and do not take much effort to fix. On the other hand, one failure that I deal with that is not so easy to fix is trying to perfect the aspects of my Road Warrior business plan. Every time I tr to alter the details of the company, there still feels like there is something missing. I continuously add and subtract things that could the affect the businesses outlook and it never feels like I have successfully finished. This type of failure is not one that has an outright solution. Just like an entrepreneur, the problem I face is ongoing and doesn’t have an endpoint where I can consider it to be finished and perfect. I have learned that dealing with this kind a failure can take a toll on a person and you need a lot perseverance to continue. I deal with this failure well because the feeling of not having a perfected business plan motivates me to continue to strive for perfection. This class has changed my perspective on how to deal failure because it has showed me that failing is okay an makes you more intelligent because you get another perspective on how not to fail again. Failing is okay to do and this class has prepared me to deal with failures in the future.

Whats Next?

 Existing Market
I think in our existing market we can improve on our method of reporting and dealing with certain incidents. There are some cases where we deal with rude customers and people that don’t want there car moved for legal purposes. We aim to better our system in dealing with these situations. I interviewed 3 people who are in my target market and all of them, mention that improving my system should be my main concern. Making sure we have a 100% rate of success and that our drivers are polit and deal with the situation correctly. I was told that the customer service system needs to be perfected because you do not want customers who are already upset to become more upset with my customer service.
I think to continue to grow in our existing market we need to continue to improve on our logistical operations. We need to be able to improve on our algorithmic route system so that we can keep decreasing the time it takes for road warriors to arrive at the scene. We need to continue to improve our system in reporting these incidents. One weakness that was mentioned is that most people that are reporting incidents are probably driving and we don’t want to have people getting in accidents while reporting other incidents.
New Market
I think there a plenty of new markets we can enter. Once my business concept is proven successful then the concept can be applied elsewhere. I plan on bringing the concept to every major city in the U.S. I think we can create similar value in almost any other market. People will save money and time. What will determine the value is how often traffic gets congested and how often my road warriors will be called to help.
After interviewing two people they were delighted with the concept, but their biggest dilemma is will it work. If my concept works in one city then it will not be hard to duplicate and put in another city.
I learned that my business is easily scalable once it is proven to work. I think my biggest concern is to perfect all operations in the first market so then I can duplicate the process in other cities.

Your Venture's Unfair Advantage

10 Resources
1.  I think my first resource would be our knowledgeable human capital. It is valuable because my employees need to have great knowledge to think in critical situations. They need to be able to know whether they need to apply first aid or not and how to. They also will know.  how to take care oh traffic jams by clearing up whatever is blocking the road. This is rare because there is no company that does both.

2. I think another resource we have is our algorithmic system of patrolling areas that get congested with traffic throughout the day. I think this is valuable because we have figured out a way to be within 10 minutes of any accident or traffic jam at all times in any geographic area we are located in.  This is rare because we can be to many places much faster than first responder can be.

3. The research we’ve done is very valuable because we have looked into where most congestions happen and why and came up with a method of patrolling those area more closely than others. This is rare because we will be the only company patrolling the area. This is non-substitutable because there will not be another company that has the abilities as us.

4. Another resource I hope we will have is plenty of financial capital. Having this capital will be extremely valuable because it will allowed us to take care of the high startup cost of the company and be able to direct the company in the right direction at first. After starting up the company the fixed costs will be low. The is not rare because many service companies have a similar business plan.

 5. Our customer service is a very valuable resource we have. My road warriors are always one the road driving and my customer service employees are always available to call. This isn’t rare but we strive to have a top-notch customer service system that is very responsive and gives no customer any problem. This can not be substituted by another company because we will be the first and only customer service system that provides all these amenities.

6.  Our partnership with local governments will be very valuable to the people in the area. We will be in contact with local authorities and be able to monitor traffic and accidents much better than any other service. This is rare because no other company with our abilities will have a partnership with the local government. It is not imitable because no other company will have the monitoring capabilities or access to our proprietary algorithmic system of patrolling the city. No other company can substitute our abilities or knowledge of local traffic.

7. Our Intellectual property is a very valuable resource we own. Our trucks will be able to pick up debris from the street and move wreckage quickly and safely to allow traffic through. This is rare because it usually takes a while for wreckage to be moved from accidents. It will be non-substitutable because no other truck will be allowed to have those capabilities or authority to move wreckage other than us.

8. Our sustainability goal is a something we have great pride in and puts us a ahead of other companies. This is rare because most companies in our industry just focus on profits and not a sustainable goal. Since our fee is embedded into people car registration fees, our main focus is not revenue but how to make traffic more ecofriendly.

9. Good management is a key resource we have. We have training programs for our managers so they maintain a high level of performance. This is not rare because many companies exhibit good management.

10. The mission and culture of our company is one of our biggest resources. All my employees are driven to give the best that they can. We strive to give the best service we can that’ll help prevent traffic jams around the city. We consider ourselves a first responder to traffic emergencies, even though we may not be saving lives, we are saving people time and gas money. We also are saving the environment. This is rare because our goal is not to drive profits, but it is to sustain the environment and do better for the greater good.

I think our most valuable resource is our partnership with the local government. I think that this with this connection that we will not really have any competitors in the local area. This partnership allows us to intervene with traffic jams and correct the problem. We also are able to relieve some stress off of local authorities who would usually have to monitor these traffic jams and accidents.

Elevator Pitch

The link to my pitch: https://youtu.be/0JtI8U51-n4

The feedback I received on my last pitch was that I needed to vocalize more and try to make my words clearer. I also got the feedback that I need to do more with my hands. There were some points in my pitch where my hands holding each other and I tried to improve on that. I did also tied my tie better this time and looked more professional. I think the most important thing I still need to improve on is speaking louder and making my words clearer.

Reading Reflection 2

This book had some really good information about building your social media account.  It really gave a good perspective about how to manage your social media accounts on different platforms. It gave a lot of different tactics on when and how to post on social media. The information was tailored for people who are starting up accounts for there business and they want to build a brand. The book gave in great detail how to optimize you profile and attract as many followers in a strategic manner.
The book had a good perspective about creating a brand that enhanced what I am learning in ENT3003. The book gives a good example on how to identify opportunity in a market to promote your product or service. Learning how to adapt to a changing environment and execute a strategic plan to promote and advertise.
If I had to design an assignment for this class, I would make an assignment where the students will all have to make a new account on a social media platform, and everyone has a certain time period to post as much as they want. The point is to get your post shared as much as possible. To make it even everyone has to make a new account and start with no followers.
The biggest aha moment of the book was the information on how often to post. I thought that posting as often as you could and to anyone who is popular was the way to go. It is not and that was definitely the most eye opening tactic.

Growing your Social Capital

1.       Jeanette Casselano
·       Jeanette Casselano is the public relations director for Triple A. Jeanette directs Triple A’s Public Affairs, Travel, Publishing and Triple A foundation for traffic safety public relations campaign.
·       She would be filling the spot of a market expert. I feel she could give me insights that in her role of dealing with the public on multiple issues could help me better understand the market. I could get insights on how to make my service more appealing to the public and how to create lasting relationships with other companies.
·       I was interested in Triple A’s service because it was similar to the service I want to provide. I wanted to get insight on how to deal with other organizations to have them support my cause.
·       I tried reaching out to Jeanette Casselano by email to see if she could give me those insights that I feel would be beneficial to building my sort of company. Jeanette has yet to email me back.
·       I feel that including this person in my network will enhance my connections I have and allowing me to have better insights on developing public relations.
2.       David Bell
·       David Bell is the Director of Government Relations at the American Traffic Safety Association.
·       David Bell would be filling the position of Domain expert in my industry. I feel that David would be able to help me with relationships with the government.
·       I found this person through looking at traffic safety organizations that have government relationships. I need to develop a relationship with the government to be able to have my companies fee added to the car registration fee.
·       I reached out to him via email to ask him what how to go about reaching out to government agencies and how to propose my idea.
·       I think including this person In my network could help enhance my opportunity when trying to propose my idea to a government agency.
3.       Anthony Bamford
·       Anthony Bamford is the CEO of JCB company that focuses on manufacturing equipment for construction, agriculture, waste handling and demolition.
·       He would be filling the spot of important supplier to my industry. I am hoping to buy tucks that are designed to clean up wreckage and debris from car accidents.
·       I fount this person by looking up companies that specialize in selling equipment for waste handling and demolition.
·       I reached out to Anthony Bamford but I assume I will not be hearing from him anytime soon. I was hoping to develop a relationship and for him to hear my pitch of road warriors.
·       Including Mr. Bamford in my network could be very beneficial if my company idea works. I can work with him to design a model truck that would perfectly fit my company.

Idea Napkin No. 2

My name is Isaac Valancy and I am from Pembroke Pines, Fl. I have a lot of attributes and talents that will help me run a business like the one I proposed including organization skills, prioritization and being able to lead a team. I aspire to one day control a business similar to the one I proposed. I want a utilitarian business that is designed to be helpful for the greater good and be beneficial to all parts of society. I know that if I were to be controller of a business like this that it will consume most of my time. I will be motivated to try to improve the business model to perfection and work countless hours until I do.
I am offering a service that will help prevent countless traffic jams that start for multiple reasons. There is traffic that occurs during rush hour but that is because there are too many people going to one location and those kinds of traffic jams are not the ones my company will being trying to prevent. The traffic I intend to try to prevent is traffic jams that are caused by other reasons like accidents, broken down cars and or flat tires. My company will have numerous “road warriors” on the roads at all time patrolling specified geographic areas. They will be on call at times and people will report these incidents on an app. For example, you are on your way to a certain obligation and suddenly you hit a traffic jam. It is Saturday so you did not expect a huge traffic jam. Then while the you are stuck in traffic, you report on an app that there is a traffic jam and my road warriors will then report to the traffic jam and see what is causing it. If it is a small fender-bender then my road warriors will safely and quickly clear the road and clear all debris to allow traffic through.
My service will be paid by adding a small fee to everyone’s car registration fee. I am offering this service to everyone in specified geographic locations that have traffic jams multiple times a day for numerous reasons. This service will be beneficial to people who drive and ride cars. It will save people time and gas money. It will also be very beneficial to the environment by reducing car emission from cars that just sit in traffic.
I feel that this company is unique and has competencies that set us apart from other companies. Triple A performs a similar service, but we would be much faster than Triple A is because my “road warriors” are constantly patrolling the roads waiting for the next call. My drivers will also be certified in first aid and will apply it if needed before an ambulance arrives.
I do feel one aspect of my business is sort of out-of-joint with others. I think the reporting on an app can be altered a little and maybe make it where the driver can either call a number or report it on an app. That was one of the feedback points I received and I think it is a good idea to maybe change that part. Another point I received was that making everyone pay the fee on top of a car registration fee would be difficult to put in place. I would first want to test the market and finance it with an initial investment to prove that the concept works. I feel after being able to prove the concept and prove its feasibility that I could make this a government affiliated company.

Create a Customer Avatar

My customer’s name is Tania who is a 35-year-old woman, works part-time and stays at home to take care of the children. She lives in South Florida just east of I-95 in Hallandale Beach. Her work schedule is not consistent and varies week to week, but she usually finishes work before 4 depending on how busy they were that day. Her job is in Coral Gables and her children go to school in Aventura. She works at a mall retail store where she is an assistant manager that oversees employees’ daily duties. She enjoys running and doing exercise on the beach. She says that doing exercise on the beach makes he feel 10 years younger. She drives a Hyundai Santa Fe that can fit her and her whole family which includes her husband and two children. Her two children attend elementary school in Aventura, and she is responsible for picking them up from school everyday since her husband works till late. School ends for her children around 3 but they stay in aftercare until Tania gets out of work to go pick them up. Tania knows she must be at the school to pick up her children by 5 because that’s when aftercare is officially over. She takes I-95 to get to and from work and she knows that the traffic on there can get really congested. She usually leaves work before rush hour, so she doesn’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic and not getting to school in time to pick up her kids. There are some days that even though she leaves before rush hour, she still gets stuck in traffic. Usually it is because someone is taking up a lane because their car is broke down or there was a fender-bender that holds up traffic. This traffic is unexpected and even though she panned ahead and avoided rush hour traffic, she still got stuck in unexpected traffic. This is really frustrating for Tania because she knows that she needs to be at the school before 5 and she is stuck in traffic for a silly reason. This would be a perfect time for a road warrior to be reported to so they can take care of the problem that is causing the traffic. Someone would report on an app and the nearest road warrior would arrive quickly and take care of the problem so traffic can clear up quickly. This could save Tania time so she can get to school on time to pickup her children. If she is late to pick up her kids, then she must pay a fee to the school. Tania gets really stressed when she unexpectedly runs into traffic and road warriors would be able to save her from that stress.

Elevator Pitch 2

Link to my Elevator Pitch:  https://youtu.be/n0kjnTxvhkM

In my last elevator pitch I was given some very valuable feedback and I tried my best to incorporate into this pitch. In my last pitch I was not very vocal and there were some words I said that people were not able to understand. I also dressed more formal to mimic how I would be dressed in an actual pitch. I also tried to use my hands more. Overall I think I have much more room to improve but compared to my last pitch, I felt much more comfortable doing this one. I prepared for it better and I feel I executed the pitch in a much more relaxed state.

Figuring Out Buying Behavior No. 2

I arranged an interview with 3 people and asked them simple questions about their perspective on traffic and how they dealt with it. All of them said that they did not like traffic and there are not many ways that they could avoid it.
The interviewees had similar opinions about how they choose a set of alternatives while dealing with traffic. All the interviewees wanted something low cost. They didn’t want something that would be expensive and viewed as a luxury. One interviewee mentioned that if the quality of the removing traffic service was good and made a significant difference while they traveled through the city, then they wouldn’t mind paying a yearly fee if it saved them money. That was the one of the biggest factors for my interviewees, they all wanted to benefit from this type of service, whether it was saving time or money. I and so did my interviewees feel that the quality of the service would be the most important thing. My services goal is to save people time and money. One interviewee mentioned that if the service cost as much money as it would cost them in gas if the service didn’t exist, then it would still be worth it. They say this because they would have saved a lot of time and you can’t put a price on time. My customers overall seemed more concerned with the quality of the service rather than the price.
My service would be a yearly fee. The fee would be placed on top of your yearly car registration fee. The service will be first provided to a geographic location and will be available 24/7. The goal of my company is to make the service a government agency that helps people save time and money. It also will help the environment by reducing car emissions.
My customers main concern is the quality of the service. They all were in favor of what I was proposing but their question was how well it will work. My service had attributes that appealed to all my interviewees. Some wanted to do well for the environment while others wanted to save time or money.
Overall, I think my service will do well in my targeted segment. I don’t think that I would have much competition in the market. I think the main factor would be the quality of my service. If my service works well then customers will immediately start to realize the benefits of the company. If my company doesn’t do its job well then, I will quickly be kicked out of the market.

Halfway Reflection

1.       I think this class develops different attributes than other classes do. This class has multiple assignments due each week and it is always the same number and type of assignments due. The skill I have improved on greatly is my time management. I’ve gotten better at planning ahead for things and meeting deadlines. The thing I like about this class and what helps me with time management is that all the assignments for the semester are posted and you can start on them early if you need to. Being able to see all the assignments allows you to plan accordingly and budget your time so you can finish all the assignments by the deadline.
2.       There was one moment in this class where I felt like giving up and not completing a certain assignment. It was during the elevator pitch week. At first, I was not completely comfortable with recording myself and pitching my idea. What had pushed me through were the very informative videos that Dr. Pryor posted to help me get through my fears and see other examples of elevator pitches. I do feel like I have developed more of a tenacious attitude during this semester and it has helped me in my other classes as well. I have persevered through many tough assignments and have learned how to deal with the pressure of meeting multiple deadlines a week. I think having a lot of assignments that are all posted can help you build a routine similar to how work will be for some in the future.
3.       One tip I would offer a next semester student would be to plan and make a schedule on when and how long you will work on this class and others. I think planning ahead will relieve much of the stress of having a lot of assignments. Another tip is to try to start the assignments earlier in the week because a lot of the assignments are time consuming and can not be done in one sitting. The last tip I would give is to really try to give good peer reviews to your classmates. The peer reviews are very beneficial and taking them seriously will give you a better understanding of the concept because it forces you to give an alternative point of view.

Reading Reflection 1

1. Walter Isaacson delivered a very intriguing biography about Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs had a very interesting life with many ups and downs. One thing that surprised me the most about Steve Jobs was that he was given away to a different set of parents when he was born and later in his life, he found his biological parents and discovered he had a sister. It also surprises me that after starting to have success with Apple, that his mom didn’t reach out to him but that he had to reach out to his mom. What I admired most about Jobs was his ability to introduce so many new products to so many new markets. Many critics would bash down his ideas, but he would prove them wrong. What I least admired about Jobs was his intake of drugs. In 1985, Jobs was fired from Apple due to his brattish behavior and eventually returned after working with Pixar for several years.
2. I also admired Jobs passion to be perfect. He was a perfectionist and wanted everyone else that worked for him to be a perfectionist and to see his vision as well. He was very rude to employees that didn’t comply, but it was because he wanted his workers to be perfect. Any employee that Jobs realized was below average, he would fire on the spot. Jobs passion and perfectionist personality led his company to what it is today.
3. One part of the reading that was confusing to me was how Steve Jobs got away with being so rude to some of his employees. Even though he was let go for being mean to them there were a lot of cases where nothing was done to Mr. Jobs.
4. One question I would ask Steve is if he ever considered whether his work-life balance was a healthy one or if he didn’t care about a work-life balance. Another question I would have to ask Steve Jobs is how he dealt with critics and other employees telling him that his products weren’t going to sell.
5. I think Steve Jobs opinion of hard work is different than most people. He was a perfectionist with no room for error. I think he pushed some people to hard and maybe himself too hard. I am not saying if he changed his methods that he may have been more successful. I do share the passion aspect of how he worked but I do not agree on how he treated himself and other people. I think if you have a similar passion like Jobs did then you will be able to accomplish the things you set your mind to because if you are so passionate about your work then it really doesn’t feel like work.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior

1.      When deciding to choose a specific market for my company I will first need to consider certain factors. I will first look for a geographic area that is overly populated. I would not consider an area that does not have a high population because traffic may not be a big issue for this area and there is no need for my company. I am looking for a metropolitan area where traffic occurs throughout multiple parts of the day. Drivers in areas like around Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and New York average over 75 hours spent in traffic each year. Once I choose one of these highly populated areas I will have to market to the people of this area. These people will fall into the demographic of people over legal driving age and that commute with there own cars.
2.      I had to interview more than 3 people to find people in my market segment. I found 2 people that are from the New York area and one that lives by Miami. These people all verified that before coming to the University of Florida, while living in these areas they would deal with countess hours of traffic every day. They explained to me that it was hard to predict when there would be traffic. I also asked if they realized the cost of congestion that they have to pay yearly. According to the Texas Transportation Institute the average cost of congestion per person in the Miami metropolitan area was $612 and in the New York area it was $580. Also, air pollution is also highest in these areas compared to less populated areas.
3.      One interviewee went on to say that trying to avoid traffic is a daily struggle. Whether it is the middle of the day or in the middle of the night there are some roads and highways that seem to always be congested for some reason or another. I would want to have this service available at all times of the day. There are multiple reasons that cause traffic in these areas other than rush hour and if I am able to take away those forms of traffic than I can take away the big cost of traffic in these areas.
4.      My interviewees were always aware of having too much traffic in the areas they lived by. If my service is implemented in populated area, then I hope to cut the cost of congestion in half. I will market to the areas that have this problem and promote the application that needs to be downloaded to report incidents on the road.
5.      I found that my interviewees did not have a hard time figuring out the problem of traffic. They were able to figure out what the costs were including the cost of gas, time loss and the environmental effects. They were all on board to paying a one time yearly fee to help lower the cost of traffic.
 6.   I concluded that most people I interviewed were able to realize that sitting in traffic cost them a lot of money each year. I was also able to conclude that all the people who were able to recognize the problem said that they would be willing to pay a small fee on their annual car registration fee to have the annual cost of traffic reduced. I figure that the small fee would be smaller than the amount of money I can save on traffic for people in a large metropolitan area if my company is implemented.

Idea Napkin

1.       My name is Isaac Valancy and I am trying to start a business called “Road Warriors”. I am very good at critical decision making and understanding problems. I am experienced in analyzing and constructing financial statements. I aspire to create a utilitarian business that services people in highly populated geographic areas.  This service will be available to everyone in the areas that we are located in. I want to own and control this business and put all my time into making it work correctly. I would like to make this a full time occupation and I want to continually improve the aspects of the business to eventually reach a perfect model. I want this business to be seen as a company that does goods for the people it serves by saving them money and time on a daily basis.
2.       I first want to test the market in one geographic area. I want to find out if the business concept works and if I am able to scale and bring this service all over the country. I want to pick an area that is heavily populated and is known for having a lot of traffic jams. I will have an application where people can report an incident on the road that is causing a traffic jam.  I will have various workers called “road warriors” that will continuously be on the roads waiting to be called. Once a person reports the incident through the app, the closest driver to the incident will be notified and head to the scene quickly. Since I will always have multiple drivers on the road then it is more likely that my drivers will be relatively close to the scene of the incident and be there before any first responders. My driver will evaluate the scene and figure out whether any first aid is needed for anybody affected by the incident. If there is anyone injured my drivers, who are certified in first aid, will begin attending to the injured until an ambulance arrives. After evaluating the scene and figuring out whether anyone is injured or not then they will begin their main job. The road warrior will begin to clear the road up for traffic to pass through. Whether it is moving a car or two that’s blocking a lane or picking up big pieces of debris from an accident, my driver will try to this as quickly and safe as possible to end the big traffic jam.
3.       I will be offering this service to a city or county that is heavily populated. I will first start in an area that is known for having bad traffic. Having this service in a low populated area with no traffic problems would be costly, inefficient and pointless. This service will be offered to all the people who are in the heavily populated geographic area. Anyone who owns a car in this area will have to pay an extra fee on top of their annual car registration fee. Since everyone who lives there is paying for the service, it will be serviced throughout that area 24/7.
4.       The people that will have access to this service will benefit greatly in several ways. If my road warriors are successful, then they will be able to save people from having to sit in traffic for a long time or even at all.  It will save people gas money that is wasted from sitting in hours of traffic every year and will save a lot of people time by avoiding hours of unexpected traffic. Lastly, it will benefit the environment because having hundreds of cars just sitting on the highway has bad effects on air pollution.
5.       I think what sets us apart is that we are trying to solve a problem that will benefit everyone on the road and the environment. Since we serve everyone in a certain geographical location that drives a car, then our problem is not trying to market and make profits but to sustain the environment and to try to cut the America’s cost on traffic each year. We will be a government association that is aimed to help clear the roads and avoid pointless traffic jams.
I think these 5 elements of my company go well together for the most part. The only problem I think I would have while starting the company is making myself into a government association and being allowed to charge an extra fee on top of the annual car registration fee. I think that once I am able to test the market and prove my concept then it will be easier to scale.

Elevator Pitch

Here is the the link to my pitch:

https://youtu.be/xqS0aMx1hnc

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

The unmet need or problem that I found is dealing with unexpected traffic. People can predict that there will be traffic during some hours of the day and they are able to plan for traffic like this. The traffic that is unexpected like traffic due to an accident, or someone with a flat tire is the kind of traffic that I think can be avoided.

I interviewed more than 5 people because I kept getting similar responses to my questions. I found that people with this need usually live in bigger cities than Gainesville. One interviewee told me they lived in Starke, Florida their whole life and that traffic was never a problem by them. The traffic that is usually dealt with in this area is traffic on the nearby highways including the Florida Turnpike and I-75.

Who:  There are certain people that fall outside the unmet need. These people live in small cities and don’t live around any major cities. Though these people do deal with occasional traffic on the nearby highways, the inner-city streets are usually clear. People that don’t own a car and commute using a different mode of transportation to work or school are people that do not deal with this problem.
What: I think this need differs from other needs is because this is a problem that is hard to avoid and is dealt with by most people who drive a car. Traffic that is due to rush hour is unavoidable but the reason that there is so much traffic is because there are too many people commuting to and from work. The need I identified is traffic that is due an accident or a car malfunction that blocks the road.
Why: The people who end up outside the need are usually people who live in less populated areas. For these people, even when there is an accident or something happens that blocks the roads unexpectedly, there aren’t enough cars in the area to cause a traffic jam.

Inside the boundary
Who is in: People that own a car and live in or around a major city.
What the need is: Unexpected traffic that cost millions of people money and time. It is also bad for the environment.
Why the need exists: People have accidents or car malfunctions and will block up multiple lanes and can cause hours of traffic. If it were dealt with quickly and efficiently then can be avoided and save people money and time.

Outside the boundary:
Who is not: People that live in smaller less populated cities and don’t deal with traffic often.
What the need is not: It is not necessary to implement a solution for these people because it isn’t a big enough problem for them.
Alternative Explanations: Not enough people in an area will not create huge traffic jams and therefor there is not real problem in those areas that needs to be resolved.

I think that the service I thought of would only work in certain areas. The areas need to be very populated and have traffic throughout the day for several reasons. If the area isn’t populated or never has traffic jams then the service would not be necessary in these areas.

Solving The Problem

Traffic is a huge problem in the U.S. There are many reasons for traffic, like morning and afternoon rush hour. In my opinion the worst type of traffic is traffic caused by accidents or people having problems with their cars and taking up one or more lanes. The reason I think it is the worst type of traffic is because this kind of traffic is unexpected and cannot be planned for. I think there is a way to better deal with unexpected accidents to keep roads and highways running as efficiently as possible.
My idea is a service that will be faster than first responders to arrive at the scene of an accident or car malfunction. Their job will be to start clearing the road to let traffic through and taking the essential steps to aid the ones in need. My employees would be called “road warriors” and will be people in tow trucks that are constantly on the road waiting for a report of either an accident or small car problem like a flat tire or something that looks like it will hold up traffic. People will be able to report the problem through a free app like the way Waze reports police and traffic. Always having multiple road warriors on the road means my drivers will be closer to the spot of the accident and be there much faster than first responders are and the tow trucks that clear the road up.
These road warriors will be certified in first aid because when they arrive first to a scene and see that first aid is needed, they can start before an ambulance gets there. Also, when my road warriors are first to a scene and it turns out to be a flat tire, small car problem or fender bender and no one is injured, then their main job will be to clear the road up and let traffic through. The steps the road warrior would take is to first evaluate the scene and determine whether first aid needs to be performed and to report it to authorities. Then after that, they would start cleaning up the roads to let traffic through.
There is no reason for people to be backed up in traffic for a long time just because of one or two people having a small problem. Having a whole lane taken up because of someone having a flat tire is absurd. My road warriors will be quick and always be the first to the scene to take care of the problem as quickly as possible.
My service will not be paid directly through the app or to me. My plan is to partner first with the local government in a small area and then to eventually branch out to other cities. Every year every driver on the road must pay a car registration fee to be allowed to drive on the road. I would like to have my service fee attached on top of that registration fee. This service will be available to everyone on the road.
I think that if it becomes a popular trend to report to the road warriors then traffic will be able to run more smoothly with less unexpected traffic jams. We will be the first to the scene and do all that is necessary to fix the problem and let traffic through.

Testing The Hypothesis

1.      U.S. is the world leader in traffic jams
2.     The who: Drivers in the U.S.
The what: People are spending countless hours in traffic every year and it is costing people a lot of money in direct and indirect costs.
The why: Traffic happens for many reasons. Early morning and afternoon rush hour are inescapable but having hours of traffic due to accidents is something that can be fixed. There are traffic jams that are caused by very minuscule reasons and if they were dealt with right away, it could save a lot of people time and money.
3.     I believe that this an opportunity that can be exploited and be resolved in the future. I think a resolution needs to be implemented relatively quickly because this problem affects many things including making people late to their obligations, costing people money, and it is also bad for the environment.
·       Testing the who: This is a problem that affects people across the world who drive cars. This affects the environment due to fuel consumption and car pollution. These cars that are stuck in traffic release emissions and create air pollution which contributes to global warming.
·       Testing the what: Traffic isn’t only a problem in big cities. A lot of traffic jams occur on highways that run from city to city. Traffic jams that are caused by an inconsiderate driver who has some problem that is relatively small and ends up blocking a lane and causes a traffic jam.
·       Testing the why: The problem can be rooted from many things like not having enough lanes on the road or accidents that are not cleared up fast enough. People on the road that have problems with their cars and don’t pull off the road.
4.     Interviewee #1: Noah Rodriguez
Noah is from Pembroke Pines, Fl. I asked him if he deals with traffic often when he lived in Pembroke Pines. He says he would only deal with traffic in the mornings on the way to school. He says that the drive home takes about half the time than the drive to school. Noah says he blames the traffic on the other students and staff driving to the school at the same time and trying to enter the only parking lot entrance of the school.
Interviewee #2: Nina Albino
Nina is from Miami Fl. and says she cannot stand the way people drive around her. She says people always drive very erratically and are trying to get to where they are going as fast as they can. She told me she lives by the palmetto highway and that it is always backed up because of an accident or little fender benders that don’t move out of the way. She says no matter the time of day that it is she always ends up running into the traffic on the palmetto.
Interviewee #3: Amadeo Gonzales
Amadeo used to live just outside New York city and is a sustainability’s major. He said he’s dealt with traffic in and around New York city all the time and not only during rush hours. He says some highways always had traffic on them during the day. Amadeo’s family owned a smart car and were advocates of trying to sustain the environment. I asked him if he would drive in traffic often or try to avoid it and he said it was almost impossible to avoid because it was all around him. He said waiting in traffic wasn’t his biggest concern, but that traffic was contributing to global warming. He says it was sometimes difficult to breathe where he lived because of all the emissions cars in traffic were releasing. The air pollution is what bothered Amadeo the most and he seemed upset that nothing was being done about it.
Interviewee #4: Tanner Redding
Tanner lives in South Florida near Ft. Lauderdale and says traffic wasn’t the biggest problem for him because he drives a motorcycle. He says he could maneuver through traffic relativity easily because he would drive between stopped cars in traffic and zip right past everyone. I thought that this was dangerous because what if a car wanted to change lanes right when he was passing them and didn’t see him. He said he was aware that it was sort of dangerous but that he always is aware of cars trying to change lanes. Tanner spoke as if he had the solution to getting past traffic.
Interviewee #5: Mateo Galiano
Mateo is from Baltimore, MD. and says traffic in the area he is from isn’t bad because there are too many cars on the road but that there are too many accidents in his area. He says he sees an accident every other day. He says his city is one of the most dangerous cities to drive in because there are so many accidents. I could only imagine the frustration of people in the area who are constantly hitting unexpected traffic jams due to accidents. It turns out Baltimore has one of the highest rates of car accidents every year. That must mean a lot of traffic jams are occurring unexpectedly and costing people money and making them late to where they were going.
5.     It is easy to see that traffic is a problem all over the place and there are many reasons that cause traffic. I know that hitting traffic unexpectedly is in my opinion the worst type of traffic because you cannot leave early to compensate for the traffic. This kind of traffic is due to accidents or people having problems with their cars.
